Mayland Gun Club welcomes members of the public to come and have a go at Clay Pigeon Shooting. No previous knowledge, experience or licences are needed for you to come and have a go at the UK's quickest growing sport. We will supply you with everything you need on the day for you to have a go. The club has shotguns for you to borrow (under supervision with a CPSA qualified instructor), eye and ear protection, shotgun shells and easy to hit beginner clays.

You can come to as many have a go sessions as you want while you are deciding if this sport is for you. You are under no pressure to join the club or take part in anything you are uncomfortable with. I think its fair to warn you in advance, its highly addictive and you will soon become hooked in this fantastic sport.

Your first step

To book a have a go session you will simply need to contact the club and book in. (Bill Logan 07958 637788) Why not bring the family along to have a go? or perhaps bring some friends? Even if they don't want to have a go they are welcome to come and watch.

On the day

Simply turn up in clothing appropriate for the weather. Shooting is undercover so don't worry if its raining. We will take care of you once you are there and show you everything you need to know.

Introduction.

  • Meet with your instructor

  • safety with handling a shotgun. How to carry, make safe and its basic components

  • Master eye check. Some people need to shoot with one eye closed, others with both open. The instructor will check which is your master eye and advise you of your best option when shooting. Its a very simple exercise that gets you to look at an object at a distance while pointing your finger at it.

  • Gun mount and fit. As all people are different sizes we will need to select you a club gun that fits your body.

  • Safety equipment. Whilst shooting a gun is safe you will need protection for both your eyes and ears. Guns are very loud and if you don't wear ear defenders you could damage your hearing

  • Stance and holding the gun. Off the range we will show you the correct stance to adopt when shooting and how to hold the gun. This is crucial if you are going to be smashing the clays

  • At the range. A recap on safety and put your safety glasses and ear defenders on ready to go

  • An explanation of how the targets are released and where to expect to see them coming from. A few clays will be released so you know what they look like

  • Under the watchful eye of our instructor you will now be calling 'pull' and shooting the targets
